Food labeling change: understand Front-of-Package (FoP)

05/10/2022

Food labeling will change from October 9th. Now, food will have to bring a nutrition facts table of the product through Front-of-Package (FoP), also known as frontal nutritional labeling in Portuguese.

This change follows a trend of Brazilians, who now seek healthier food, making ultra-processed food lose space for more natural options on the shelves of supermarkets. Thus, the new table format has much to add to Brazilian consumers.

From the companies’ perspective, FoP can be an alternative to reshape production formulas and get healthier food or even highlight advantages of the product itself, such as the presence of natural inputs and the little or no use of preservatives.

To better understand the change in food labeling, Frootiva® Co brings this article, which compiles all planned changes and shows how to follow the trend of healthier consumption!

What changes in new food labeling?

New food labeling changes the nutrition facts table and adds the front-of-pachage (FoP) labeling.

Thus, foods already marketed have a period of 12 months until the change comes into force, while foods and beverages with returnable packaging have a period of 36 months.

Family farmers, small-sized companies, and solidarity entrepreneurs have 24 months to implement the new food labeling rules.

How Will the Nutrition Facts Table Be?

Until now, the nutrition facts table was the main source of information on food labels, but it will undergo adjustments to make the information clearer to consumers.

Before, companies could use contrasts and personalize this nutritional label. Now they are obliged to use black letters on a white background. Also on the table, the new change requires the location always be close to the list of ingredients used, except for +100 cm² packages.

In the content of a nutrition facts table, the new food labeling rules establish the declaration of total and added sugars, as well as the energy and nutrient value, always per 100g or 100ml.

Front-of-Package on Food Labeling

Among the changes, Front-of-Package stands out for facilitating communication between consumers. Here, FoP works as a magnifying glass, that is, it highlights the most relevant nutritional facts to the health of those who buy a particular product.

In the Brazilian Front-of-Package model, the content considers three nutrients, namely added sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. In each product, FoP will always be in front of the packaging, at the top. All this to facilitate the visualization on the supermarket shelves.

High content of Solid and semi-solid food Liquid food
Added sugar 15g or more per 100g of food 7.5g or more per 100ml of food
Saturated fat 6g or more per 100g of food 3g or more per 100ml of food
Sodium 600mg or more per 100g of food 300mg or more per 100ml of food
